Classical Persian Prosody
Instructor: Dr. Theodore Beers
Service Description
This course introduces the formal structure of classical Persian poetry through the study of prosody (ʿarūż). Beginning with the principles of quantitative meter (vazn), students will learn how to scan verses, recognize the most common metrical patterns, and appreciate the rhythmic foundations of the classical poetic tradition. The course will also examine rhyme (qāfiya) and refrain (radīf), major verse forms such as the qaṣīda, ghazal, and maṡnavī, and other conventions that help to give Persian poetry its distinctive artistry. Using Wheeler Thackston's "Millennium of Classical Persian Poetry" as its primary guide, the course emphasizes practical skills that will enable students to read Persian poems with greater confidence and insight. * The course starts during the first week of October and concludes in the second week of December, spanning 10 weeks (10 sessions). The exact days and times will be scheduled based on the availability of both the instructor and the learners. * Once learners enroll, Silk Road Academy will coordinate the class schedule, process payments, and manage administrative details. * Silk Road Academy can issue invoices so learners can request reimbursement from their affiliated universities or institutions. * Class days and times may be adjusted in accordance with the request of enrollees. * Registered participants will receive full access to recorded session videos and all course materials.
