Service Description

Turkish Through Literature: Ten Words, Ten Writers Türkçenin Duygu Haritası 10 weeks · 1 hour per week · open to all levels Some words do not survive translation. Hüzün, özlem, taşra, tutunamamak — each one carries a whole way of seeing the world, and each one opens a door into Turkish literature. Over ten weeks, this course takes up one word and one remarkable writer in each session; we read a short passage together and follow the word wherever it leads: to a fishing village, to a provincial madhouse, to a love that is never spoken, to a melancholy city. This is not a heavy reading course. Each meeting lasts a single hour and turns on a carefully chosen passage — enough to hear a writer's voice, to understand what makes it distinctive, and to decide whether you want to read more. Along the way you will meet the writers Türkiye genuinely loves: Sait Faik, Aziz Nesin, Şermin Yaşar, Sabahattin Ali, Tezer Özlü, Ayfer Tunç, Elif Şafak, Orhan Pamuk, Oğuz Atay and Murathan Mungan. Passages are short and supported in both Turkish and English, and the discussion is led largely in English — you do not need advanced Turkish, only curiosity, whatever your level. You will leave this course not with a reading list, but with names for a few things you could not name before. You will see what a language finds worth distinguishing — and what it leaves unsaid. Ten words you recognise the moment you hear them, ten remarkable writers, ten hours. * The course starts during the first week of October and concludes in the second week of December, spanning 10 weeks (20 sessions). The exact days and times will be scheduled based on the availability of both the instructor and the learners. * Once learners enroll, Silk Road Academy will coordinate the class schedule, process payments, and manage administrative details. * Silk Road Academy can issue invoices so learners can request reimbursement from their affiliated universities or institutions. * Class days and times may be adjusted in accordance with the request of enrollees. * Registered participants will receive full access to recorded session videos and all course materials. Dr. Gökçe Karaoğlu holds a PhD in media and communications and an MA in management and economics from the University of Zurich (UZH), Switzerland, as well as a double major in business administration and media and visual arts from Koç University, Istanbul.
